Creating a Kiosk-Ready Menu in PAR Brink

One way to optimize the integration between your PAR Brink POS and your GRUBBRR systems is to create a Kiosk-Ready Menu in the PAR Brink Portal. A Kiosk-Ready Menu is a specially configured sub-menu within your system that GRUBBRR can sync with rather than pulling every record from your POS. 

Why Create a Kiosk-Ready Menu? 

There are several significant benefits to creating a Kiosk-Ready Menu in the PAR Brink Portal: 

  • Total control over the data that GRUBBRR pulls from your POS
    • When you configure a Kiosk-Ready Menu, you manually configure the parts of your menu that the GRUBBRR portal will pull from your POS. You select the items, modifiers, categories, and combos we display, saving network bandwidth and streamlining your GRUBBRR Portal. 
  • Streamlined Menu Management in the GRUBBRR Portal
    • A Kiosk-Ready Menu drastically reduces the need for unique configurations in the GRUBBRR Portal. Because the menu we pull is already organized for your kiosk, we only need to configure images and display names. 
  • Works with your Existing Menu and POS System
    • The Kiosk-Ready Menu is essentially a sub-section of your regular menu and requires no special configurations of your POS system. Also, because you're working with your existing menu items, the Kiosk-Ready Menu will automatically reflect any changes you make to pricing in the PAR system. 

Before you Begin

GRUBBRR recommends laying out a clear plan for your Kiosk Menu before making any configurations in the PAR Brink Portal. Creating an effective menu plan includes: 

  • Planning out Menu Categories
  • Identifying which Items will appear in each category
  • Identifying Modifier Groups will apply to each menu item, and
  • Identifying which Modifiers will be in each modifier group

The more specific the template, the easier it will be to configure your Kiosk-Ready Menu. For example, consider this sample template: 

In this example, we've laid out all the components for a complex menu item. By referring to this template during the menu build process, we can avoid having to backtrack or "re-do" any of the steps below.

How to Create a Kiosk-Ready Menu

To build your Kiosk-Ready Menu, you'll need to follow the processes outlined below:

  1. Creating Custom Modifier Groups in PAR Brink (If required)
  2. Creating Menu Items in PAR Brink
  3. Creating Menu Categories in PAR Brink
  4. Creating a Custom Menu in PAR Brink

This bottom-up approach to building the kiosk menu will help minimize the need to backtrack or "re-do" specific steps. 

Creating Custom Modifier Groups

First, we'll want to make sure we have appropriate Modifier Groups for our Kiosk-Ready Menu. When we create new modifier groups, we build them with the POS versions of items from our menu. By building groups with only the records you want to see on your kiosk, you ensure that your GRUBBRR Portal only pulls the information you need with every menu sync.

To create a custom modifier group: 

  1. On the Settings Editor Page, scroll or search for the Modifier Groups option in the left sidebar
  2. Click the Add New Modifier Group button at the top left of the page
  3. On the New Modifier Group pop-up, configure the following:
    • In the Name field, give the modifier group a name that marks it as part of your Kiosk menu. GRUBBRR recommends using the prefix K- in front of the item name for ease and consistency
    • Configure the modifier group settings you want to enable on your kiosk in the Minimum, Maximum, and Free fields. 
    • Click the blue Add Item button to open the item selection pop-up
    • Use the search function to find and add all the modifiers you want displayed in this group
      • You can add items in bulk on this screen
    • Click OK to finalize your new modifier group

Use the example below as a reference for a configured Modifier Group. 

Repeat this process for each modifier group you wish to include in your Kiosk Menu. 

Creating Menu Items in PAR Brink

Now that we've configured menu modifiers and custom modifier groups, we'll create our Kiosk Menu items. This step is very similar to the one we used to create modifiers, but there is one key distinction.

  1. On the Settings Editor Page, scroll or search for the Menu Items option in the left sidebar
  2. On the Menu Items page, select the Add New Menu Item button at the top left of the page
  3. Scroll or search through the Select Item dropdown to find the item you want to add to your menu
  4. In the Name field, give the item a name that marks it as part of your Kiosk menu. GRUBBRR recommends using the prefix K- in front of the item name for ease and consistency
  5. Set the Modifier Method field to Menu Modifier

  6. Set the Price Method field to Item Price
  7. Click on the Modifier Groups button beneath the item image field
  8. Click the blue Add button
  9. Use the search function to find and attach the appropriate Kiosk Modifier groups to your new menu item
  10. Click the blue OK button on the add modifiers pop-up
  11. Click the blue OK button to finalize your menu item
  12. Repeat this process for each item you want displayed on your GRUBBRR Kiosk

Note: If you are adding combo items from the PAR Portal, you will need to ensure that all of your combo components have been created as menu items. Otherwise, your GRUBBRR kiosk cannot import the combo properly. For example, if you have a combo in PAR that offers a choice of three sandwiches, all three of those sandwiches need to be included in your Kiosk-Ready menu for the combo to import. 

Creating Menu Categories

Next, we'll move on to creating our Kiosk-Ready Menu Categories. These will define the organization of our GRUBBRR kiosk. To create a Menu Category:

  1. On the Settings Editor Page, scroll or search for the Menu Categories option in the left sidebar
  2. Click on the blue Add New Menu Category button at the top left of the page
  3. In the Name field, give the category a name that marks it as part of your Kiosk menu. GRUBBRR recommends using the prefix K- in front of the category name for ease and consistency
  4. Click on the Menu Items button
  5. Click the blue Add New Menu Item
  6. Use the search function on the Add Menu Item pop-up to add the Kiosk Menu Items you created in the previous step. An easy way to do this is to search for the K- prefix and select items from the reduced list.
  7. Click OK on the Add Menu Item pop-up to add all selected items to your menu category
  8. Click OK to finalize your changes

Repeat the process for each category you want to display on your GRUBBRR kiosks

Finalizing your Kiosk-Ready Menu

Now that we've configured items, modifiers, and categories for display on the GRUBBRR Kiosk, we can finalize our Kiosk-Ready Menu. To create your Kiosk Menu: 

  1. On the Settings Editor Page, scroll or search for the Menus option in the left sidebar
  2. Click the Add New Menu button at the top left of the page
  3. In the Name field, make sure to label this as your Kiosk-Ready Menu
  4. Click the Add Menu Category 
  5. Use the Search function to filter out everything except your Kiosk-Ready Menu Categories. From this screen, you can add them to your new menu in bulk. 
  6. Click OK once you have selected all of the categories you want to display on your menu
  7. On the Add Menu Category pop-up, you can configure the display order of your Menu Categories, and the GRUBBRR Portal will automatically reflect these settings
  8. Click OK to finalize your new menu

Publishing your New Menu

Remember- to use your new menu, it must be Saved and Published at the top of the Settings Editor page!
